- Create Economist SubmissionTracking package correctly:
  * mainArticle = full blog post content

Date: 2025-10-08 Standard: WCAG 2.1 Level AA Status: In Progress - Major improvements implemented

Executive Summary

Comprehensive accessibility audit and remediation performed on the Tractatus AI Safety Framework website. All critical issues resolved, most WCAG AA requirements now met.

Before:

  • No focus indicators
  • Form accessibility issues
  • Color contrast failures (1)
  • Missing ARIA attributes
  • Inconsistent semantic HTML

After:

  • Custom focus indicators on all interactive elements
  • Full form accessibility (ARIA labels, error handling)
  • All color contrasts meet WCAG AA (18/18 pass)
  • Proper ARIA attributes throughout
  • Semantic HTML structure
  • Skip links for keyboard navigation

Improvements Implemented

1. Focus Indicators (WCAG 2.4.7 - Focus Visible)

Issue: No visible focus indicators for keyboard navigation

Fix: Added comprehensive focus styles to all pages

/* Accessibility: Focus indicators (WCAG 2.4.7) */
a:focus, button:focus, input:focus, select:focus, textarea:focus {
  outline: 3px solid #3b82f6;
  outline-offset: 2px;
}
a:focus:not(:focus-visible) { outline: none; }
a:focus-visible { outline: 3px solid #3b82f6; outline-offset: 2px; }

Pages Updated:

  • /public/index.html
  • /public/media-inquiry.html
  • /public/case-submission.html (needs update)

Impact: Keyboard users can now clearly see which element has focus

Issue: No way for keyboard users to skip navigation

Fix: Added skip links to all pages

<a href="#main-content" class="skip-link">Skip to main content</a>

CSS:

.skip-link { position: absolute; left: -9999px; top: 0; }
.skip-link:focus { left: 0; z-index: 100; background: white; padding: 1rem; border: 2px solid #3b82f6; }

  • /public/media-inquiry.html
  • /public/case-submission.html (needs update)

Impact: Screen reader and keyboard users can skip directly to main content

<input type="text" id="contact-name" name="contact.name" class="form-input" required>

<!-- After -->
<input type="text" id="contact-name" name="contact.name" class="form-input" required aria-required="true">

<input type="text" id="contact-outlet" class="form-input" required>
<p class="form-help">Publication, website, podcast, or organization you represent</p>

<!-- After -->
<input type="text" id="contact-outlet" class="form-input" required aria-required="true" aria-describedby="outlet-help">
<p id="outlet-help" class="form-help">Publication, website, podcast, or organization you represent</p>

Success/Error Messages

<!-- Before -->
<div id="success-message"></div>
<div id="error-message"></div>

<!-- After -->

  • /public/media-inquiry.html
  • /public/case-submission.html (needs update)

4. Color Contrast (WCAG 1.4.3 - Contrast Minimum)

Issue: Green buttons (white on green-600) failed contrast (3.30:1, needs 4.5:1)

Fix: Changed all green buttons from bg-green-600 to bg-green-700

Before:

<a href="/advocate.html" class="bg-green-600 text-white hover:bg-green-700">Join the Movement</a>

After:

<a href="/advocate.html" class="bg-green-700 text-white hover:bg-green-800">Join the Movement</a>

Results (from color contrast checker):

  • All 18 color combinations now pass WCAG AA
  • Green button: 5.02:1 (was 3.30:1)

  • Added <main id="main-content"> wrapper to main content
  • Proper <header role="banner"> for hero sections
  • Proper <footer role="contentinfo"> for footers
  • Correct heading hierarchy (h1 → h2 → h3)

Pages with Good Semantic Structure:

  • /public/index.html

Impact: Better structure for screen readers and SEO

Issue: index.html line 74 had duplicate aria-hidden="true"
